American Red Cross The American Red Cross and our partners need your help as we work to reduce death and injury from home fires by 25% by 2020.

What is the Home Fire Campaign?

Each year, the Red Cross responds to nearly 66,000 disasters, the vast majority of which are home fires. The goal of the campaign is to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by 25% by 2020. 

On Average:

  • 7 people die every day from a home fire
  • 36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every day
  • Over $7 billion in property damage occurs every year

Two Steps, Two Minutes

Step 1. Practice your 2-minute drill. Make sure your family can safely escape a home fire in under 2 minutes. Make sure to have an agreed-on place to meet outside of the home if there is a fire to ensure everyone is accounted for. 

Step 2. Test your smoke alarms monthly. This can help make sure that you and your family are alerted as soon as a fire starts. If the smoke alarm isn't working, change the batteries. Smoke alarms and CO detectors typically have only a 10 year life span. If yours are older than that, they should be replaced.
