Library Board Meeting Minutes: April 23, 2013

Call to Order: President Bogue called the meeting of the Duluth Public Library Board to order at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Mt. Royal Branch Library. Bogue welcomed new board member Megan Oswald, and introductions were made. On a motion by D’Allaird, seconded by Katz, the agenda was approved.

Members Present: Sister Edith Bogue, Jane Brissett, Dan D’Allaird, Frank Jewell, Virginia Katz, Megan Oswald, Andrew Slade

Also Present: City Councilor Emily Larson, Carla Powers

Excused:  Printha Markert, Peter Spooner


Minutes: A correction and an addition were noted. Under “Call to Order” the month should read March and not February. Under the Duluth Library Foundation report, it should be noted that Virginia Katz was elected president of the foundation board, and Mark Melhus was elected to another term as treasurer. On a motion by Brissett, seconded by D’Allaird, the library board minutes of the regular meeting of March 26 were approved as amended.


Friends of the Library – Powers

Bogue asked about a form to fill out to volunteer for the book sale.  Brissett had requested a copy of the form and will forward it to Bogue.


Duluth Library Foundation – D’Allaird

The foundation’s intern prepared a detailed report outlining other public libraries’ supporting organizations and projects they undertake to raise funds. The foundation board will discuss the report and look for ideas that may be replicated in Duluth. The foundation’s new website is live; D’Allaird invited board members to take a look. The foundation’s endowment is nearing $1 million.


One Book, One Community – Brissett

Bad weather had an impact on several One Book events this year. There will be a meeting of the One Book committee this Thursday, and Brissett will announce her resignation as project coordinator. Slade requested that the One Book Coordinator position be placed on the agenda for the May library board meeting. Board members thanked Brissett for doing a great job of coordinating this project for the past several years.


Library Manager’s Report – Powers

D’Allaird commented that the Blue Cross grant, which would make it possible for the library to be a sign-up location for health care coverage, would help fulfill the vision outlined in the strategic plan for the library to be more of a hub of community activity. Katz noted that training for Home Library Service volunteers was postponed due to poor weather and will take place this Friday. There was discussion of a play by local poet Louis Jenkins, which is being performed at the Guthrie and has received good reviews. Jewell recommended putting together a display of books by Jenkins. This was followed by suggestions for library events, including a walking club or a lecture series over the lunch hour to attract downtown business people.


Old Business:

Update on potential building project. There was discussion about how to move forward with a citizen committee. There was consensus among board members that the current Main Library facility is inadequate to meet the needs of the community. On a motion by Katz, seconded by Slade, the board voted to begin the process of hiring a consultant using funds from the 2011 capital budget, and to establish a citizen committee to look at next steps for the Main Library building.



New Business:

Building improvements at West Duluth Branch. Powers outlined a list of improvements that are scheduled to take place at City Center West this summer and fall. The roof will be repaired this summer. In the fall, the restrooms off the lobby will be completely gutted and remodeled to meet accessibility requirements. Also this fall the carpet in the library will be replaced.



The manager’s report was discussed above. Board members thanked Bogue for her letter to the editor during National Library Week.



Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m. and was followed by a brief tour of the youth services area. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 28.
